The Theory of Everything (PG-13)

James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything recounts the life of Stephen Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne), from rambunctious college student to world class scientist, by connecting the two most significant events in his early life: his diagnosis of ALS at 21, and his meeting Jane Wilde (played by Felicity Jones) shortly before that. In 1963, his diagnosis was tantamount to a death sentence, with doctors giving him no more than two years to live. Even though his mind would remain alert, he would rapidly lose control over his motor skills and muscular system, leaving him a shell of a body. And while he fell into a deep depression, Jane, who’d fallen in love with him, gave him something to live for. In the end, their love and Hawking’s sheer determination overcame all odds. Hawking would go on to marry Jane, have a family of three children, and revise the way we understand time and the nature of the universe itself. Now, at 72, he is one of the most respected and recognized scientist alive. While Hawking’s contributions to cosmology and theoretical physics remain among the most significant work in the 20th century, the example of his life, of his remarkable spirit in overcoming adversity, presents maybe an equal, if different, achievement. To honor his spirit, we spotlight six other films that showcase remarkable stories of overcoming adversity.
